Problem Note 38325: "ERROR: Variable DIR_x has been defined as both character and numeric" when adding totals to a list table that does not contain a measure

DetailsAboutRate It

In SAS® Web Report Studio, if you attempt to add totals to a list table, you might see the following error if the table does not contain any measures.

Missing report element

An error occurred in processing the report element. Please refresh the page to try again. Contact your administrator if this problem persists.

The error details will include the following relevant error:

ERROR: Variable DIR_x has been defined as both character and numeric.
	at com.sas.iquery.execution.instructions.SASSubmitHandler.execute(SASSubmitHandler.java:207)
.....

This problem occurs if the first data item in the table is a numeric category. For example, a social security number might be a numeric category.

As a workaround, rearrange the columns so that the first column is a character category, or add a measure to the table.
